The Project
CK21 provided civil and structural design services on this refurbishment and extension project.
The project consisted of the full refurbishment, including the remodelling of existing internal layout, of the existing 2 storey surgery building. A new build 3-storey extension has been constructed in place of a previous single storey accommodation building.
The new build extension provides accommodation for 18 treatment and consulting rooms as well as ancillary spaces. At ground floor there is also provision for a retail unit which is let as a Pharmacy. The structural frame and foundations for this element have been designed to accommodate the potential future addition of an additional storey over the whole footprint. The building is designed with concrete slabs supported on a combination of loadbearing masonry walls and hot rolled steel frame.
The refurbished existing building contains the reception and waiting areas, as well as a further 7 consultation and treatment rooms at ground floor level. The administration rooms are now contained within the first floor area of this section of the project. The remodelling of the existing building was complicated by the issues that arose from the fact that the building had already been extended and remodelled a number of times in the past, and the most recent works needed to consolidate all of the changes in to a coherent solution.
