About ck21

CK21 was formed in July 2005 with core services of civil and structural engineering design with CDM advice and has steadily grown since then adding full Health and safety advice, temporary works design  and Project Management to the services whilst expanding the others.

At CK21 we firmly believe in a team approach to all our projects and ensuring a positive input to industry and community initiatives. Promotion from within and empowerment to all is a core belief. A good work life balance is vital for a successful business. CK21 are an Equal Opportunity employer.

John Nielsen Director

John, together with Iain, founded CK21 in July 2005, and is responsible for business development, office management issues and project overviews. John is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Environmentalist and Principal Designer, often carrying out the latter role on projects as diverse as Durham Cathedral to South Shields Transport interchange. He is heavily involved in regional and national construction bodies as chair of CIC NE, BIM Region NE, on the boards of Constructing Excellence NE, APS, WWT NE and CIC as Nations and Regions Champion. He was one of the authors of the APS Principal Designer Guide and gives numerous talks at a regional and national level on CDM and design risk management. He also has a keen interest in developing the profile of the construction industry in schools, colleges and universities sitting on the employer liaison group for University of Northumbria and the Civil Engineering degree at that organisation.

John lives in Gosforth, and spends his spare time walking, cooking, with his family and his dogs Lottie and Lizzie.

Iain Hush Director

Along with John, Iain founded CK21 in July 2005 and his key responsibilities include the financial management of the practice, business development and marketing. His major success to date has been to steer the business through the recent turbulent waters of the recession whilst maintaining the business in a healthy financial state. Although his design engineering career has taken a back seat to undertake the financial management of the business, he is still integrally involved in project reviews and problem solving. He has experience across a number of sectors including residential, education, industrial, commercial, health and retail.

If not on the golf course, attempting in vein to "master the most infuriating game ever devised", Iain can be found having what's left of his sanity eroded at St James' Park or looking after his family, take your pick which he enjoys most!

Jonathan Hays Director

Jonathan joined CK21 in October 2011 as a Senior Engineer within the Structural Engineering section, he was promoted to Associate in 2014. More recently, in July 2016, Jonathan has become a Director of CK21 and leads the structural section and CK21's BIM protocol and development.

After completing a degree in Structural Engineering and Architecture at the University of Sheffield, Jonathan worked for a large multi-disciplinary engineering consultant before taking a 12 month career break to fulfill a lifelong ambition of competing in a round the world yacht race. The race visited 6 continents and crossed 4 oceans, working as a watch leader on several of the legs helped to develop his leadership and management skills outside of the traditional work environments. The experience overall was very rewarding.

His broad experience covers a wide range of building types and methods of construction ranging from small structural surveys to large multi-million pound developments. Some of the building types that Jonathan has designed include; Sports Halls, Swimming Pools, High Spec Offices, Schools, Industrial Sheds, Machine Bases, Residential Properties.

In his spare time he still manages to get some sailing in and assists in the management of Tynemouth Sailing Club when not with his young family.

David Webb Director

David joined CK21 in January 2013 in order to develop our infrastructure offering. He became an Associate in 2015 and since July 2016 is the Director leading our civil engineering/infrastructure section. David has gained experience in all sectors in relation to external works. He has particularly developed strong links and repeat business with clients such as Story Homes and Newcastle International Airport. David, along with Jonathan, oversees CK21 technical software usage and development and has developed a high level of competence in WinDes, PDS, Autotrack, Civils 3D and Revit. He leads our AutoCAD group ensuring practice wide standards are maintained.

In his spare time his golf handicap is improving, family life developing and the dog is being well trained!
